About

Mobile application design for rural Indian farmers to prevent wild animal attacks on farms.

Approach

PAAL App is a mobile application designed to operate PAAL Device, a security product used to prevent animal attacks on farms. The app is divided into two major segments:

1. Tracking:
The map view shows the PAAL devices arranged on the farm (yellow circles). The most important factor during an animal break-into is tracking the location from which they enter. PAAL app alerts the user in case of an animal attack. Also, it shows the location and direction of the attack tracking the location of the break-into.

2. Historic Analysis:
It is also very important for farmers to have data of previous attacks in order to understand the pattern. Hence the feature of Historic Analysis shows details of the past attacks in context to the time and date along with the location detected at any given time. The highlighted days of the calender indicate the intrusion. Further clicking upon one, it enlarges to the details like time and location of the intrusion, type of animal, the device that captured it and how was the alarm turned off.

Outcome

The interface for this app is designed especially considering the lack of literacy and familiarity with complex phone applications amongst the rural Indian farmers. Hence one may notice the use of large icons, broad visuals, and less text. Both dark and light modes of this version are available for the users. After the installation of PAAL device and application, it was noted that the users were much more comfortable using the interactions and even were able to perceive the right information and data; helping them to use the PAAL device strategically.
